How your tax is worked out
Income Tax is charged on your profit after the Personal Allowance of £12,570, at 20% up to £50,270, 40% up to £125,140 and 45% above. The allowance shrinks by £1 for every £2 of income over £100,000. Scottish taxpayers use six bands from 19% to 48%.
Class 4 National Insurance is 6% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above. Class 2 is treated as paid once your profit is £7,105 or more, so there is nothing to pay. Below that you can choose to pay £3.65 a week to protect your National Insurance record.
If your bill is £1,000 or more, HMRC usually asks for payments on account: two advance payments towards next year, each half of this year's bill, due on 31/1 and 31/7. In the first year that means the bill and the first advance payment fall due on the same 31/1, which is why the first January can be a shock.
