Chipping Barnet is a market town. Its High Street meets Wood Street at St John the Baptist church, and the market at Chipping Close opens on Wednesdays and Saturdays under a charter from 1199. New Barnet's shops are on East Barnet Road, which is also where the Screwfix trade counter is, at number 184.
New Barnet's old gasworks is now Victoria Quarter, 420 homes by Citystyle Fairview, with work well under way and the first flats occupied by 8/2025.
