The jobs we do for trades

  • CIS

Registering, checking every monthly statement and getting back CIS you overpaid. If you take on your own subbies, we run the contractor side too.

  • Your tax return

One return covering CIS work, private jobs and any other income, checked with you on a call before it is filed.

    Self Assessment
  • Van and tool costs

Vans, tools and machinery you buy for the business are claimed through capital allowances or, for a van, a flat mileage rate.

  • VAT and the reverse charge

Once you are VAT registered, work for another VAT registered business that is reported under CIS usually falls under the domestic reverse charge, so your customer accounts for the VAT instead of you. It has applied since 1/3/2021 and does not cover private homeowners.

  • Going limited

When the numbers make it worth a look, we compare sole trader and company take home pay with you before anything changes.

Your trade not listed?

Roofers, plasterers, groundworkers, scaffolders, decorators, carpenters: if you work under CIS or for yourself, the same rules apply to you. Tell us what you do in the quote form and we will come back with a quote.

The tax rules on this page come from GOV.UK and HMRC guidance. Last checked .

Questions trades ask us

What happens if I am not registered for CIS?

Contractors take 30% from your pay instead of 20%. The extra still counts towards your tax, but you wait until your tax return to get it back.

Does the reverse charge apply to a job for a homeowner?

No. The reverse charge only applies when your customer is VAT registered and the work falls under CIS, so a private homeowner pays VAT in the normal way if you are registered.

Is CIS taken off the materials I supply?

It should not be. The contractor takes off the materials you paid for, the VAT and a few other costs before working out the deduction.

Should I go limited?

It depends on your profit, how much you need to take out and how you are paid. Our calculator gives a first comparison, and we talk it through with you before you change anything.
