Flat rates or actual costs
Sole traders can claim a flat rate for each business mile instead of working out the real cost of fuel, insurance, repairs and the vehicle itself. For 2026/27 that is 55p a mile for the first 10,000 miles in a car or goods vehicle and 25p after, and 24p a mile on a motorcycle.
The flat rate covers the running costs, but parking and other travel, such as a train fare, can be claimed on top.
The choice sticks. Once you use the flat rates for a vehicle, you keep using them for as long as you use that vehicle for the business, and you cannot use them for a vehicle you have already claimed capital allowances on. So for a new van it is worth comparing both ways with us before the first return.

Questions about claiming mileage
What is the mileage rate for 2026/27?
55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in a car or van, then 25p a mile. Motorcycles are 24p a mile. The first 10,000 rate went up from 45p on 6/4/2026.
Can I claim parking as well as mileage?
Yes. Parking and other travel such as train fares can be claimed on top of the flat rate.
Can I switch from mileage to actual costs later?
Not for the same vehicle. Once you use the flat rates for a vehicle you must keep using them while you use it for the business.
Does a van count as a car for mileage?
Yes. Cars and goods vehicles share the same rates: 55p for the first 10,000 miles and 25p after.
